Ironiquement, c’est aussi la plus délaissée et détériorée du réseau. Les accidents sont fréquents et les vies des passagers et des employés sont mises en danger. Aux commandes des locomotives, Ahmed, Afef, Issam, Abee et Najib sont acteurs et témoins du difficile processus de transformation des chemins de fer tunisiens, et par extension de la société post-révolutionnaire tunisienne dans son ensemble.
Tunisian railway workers assigned to Line 1 call it la voie normale (the Standard Line), as it’s the only one built to international standards. Ironically, it is also the most neglected and run-down line on the network. Accidents are frequent, and the lives of both passengers and employees are put at risk. At the controls of the locomotives, Ahmed, Afef, Issam, Abee, and Najib are both actors in and witnesses to the difficult transformation of the Tunisian railways — and, by extension, of post-revolutionary Tunisian society as a whole.
