« C’est mon son préféré – les racines de l’herbe qu’on coupe. » À Sanrizuka, l’octogénaire Katsu Someya – née en 1899 – désherbe seule son champ. Sa terre a été vendue aux autorités sept ans auparavant et depuis elle y vit seule, refusant d’en partir. Tourné en 8 mm sur trois ans avec la photographe Yukie Hatano et gonflé en 16 mm, ce film-portrait se met à l’écoute attentive de récits de vie couvrant près d’un siècle. La caméra s’installe au plus près de l’herbe, des mains de Someya et du travail de la terre. Inébranlable, elle définit son monde selon ses propres termes.
“This is my favourite sound – the roots of the grass being cut.” In Sanrizuka, Katsu Someya – born in 1899 and in her mid-eighties – weeds her field alone. Her land was sold to the authorities seven years before; she has lived on it ever since, alone. Shot on 8 mm over three years with partner Yukie Hatano and blown up to 16 mm, the film is a portrait, listening attentively to her life stories spanning nearly a century. The camera is placed closely between the grass, her hands, and the work of the land. Undaunted, she defines her world in her own terms.
