Maman, tu m’as emmené au pays. Tout ce que je sais, je l’ai appris dans le livre écrit par la main qui a brûlé ses montagnes. J’essaye de défaire les mythes coloniaux gravés dans ma mémoire, mais les collines échappent au regard. Crois-tu que je sois devenu, moi aussi, le djinn des légendes martyres ? Avant Seriana est un essai filmique tourné en Super 8 dans la région des Aurès en Algérie. En observant les paysages de ma région natale, je réalise qu’ils sont scindés entre plusieurs images et époques. Deux pays se sont formés : une Algérie des montagnes et une autre, imaginaire, née des récits que j’ai pu lire dans les archives coloniales. Mon regard n’appartient plus aux lieux où j’espérais retrouver mes racines. – Samy Benammar
Mom, you brought me back to our homeland. All I know about it I learned from the book written by the hand that burned our mountains. I try to undo the colonial myths engraved into my memory, but the hills escape my gaze. Do you think I, too, have become the white djinn spoken of by the legends surrounding our martyrs? Avant Seriana is an essay film shot on Super 8 in the Aurès region of Algeria. Observing the landscapes of my native land, I realise that they are divided into several images and times. Two different countries are formed: the Algeria of the mountains and an imaginary one born of the tales I’ve read in colonial archives. My gaze no longer belongs to the places where I was hoping to return to my roots. – Samy Benammar
