Gabi Teichert, professeure d’histoire, creuse la terre pour trouver l’histoire de l’Allemagne, afin d’améliorer le programme scolaire. Pratique, curieuse et sceptique sur la « vision patriotique positive de l’Histoire », elle enquête dans la société de son temps comme dans le passé. L’enjeu de ce film est l’obstacle que représente pour la nouvelle génération l’acceptation de son identité nationale face à une histoire qui a été déformée au service de l’État et d’une idéologie de répression. Le style non narratif de Kluge et son art de l’articulation dialectique entre les images suggèrent en soi les outils dont Gabi aura besoin pour obtenir une nouvelle perspective : de nouveaux contextes, références et juxtapositions.
Gabi Teichert, history teacher, digs the ground to find the history of Germany in order to improve the school programme. Practical, curious and sceptical of the “positive, patriotic vision of History”, she enquires into the society of her time as well as into the past. The point of the film is the obstacle represented for the young generation by the acceptance of its national identity in the face of a history that has been distorted in the service of the State and an ideology of repression. The non-narrative style of Kluge and his art of dialectical articulation between images in itself suggest the tools that Gabi will need to provide a new perspective: new contexts, references and juxtapositions.
