Synopsis

Through the screen of my phone, I witness a painful spectacle. In Shanghai, my grandmother’s health is deteriorating and my mother goes to her flat every day to look after her. I rediscovered the harshness of their relationship and the world I had put at a distance by going abroad.
When I finally arrived in China, my grandmother had died. My mother lives alone and is completely withdrawn into the religious practices she instilled in me. Prayers and offerings take up most of her time, and are absurdly intertwined with the most trivial details.
To escape this oppressive atmosphere, I walk around the neighbourhood where I grew up. I meet simple people who all talk about families separated by the need to earn a living. When I go home, I realise that my mother, like me, has always been looking for a mother’s love.
