On Africa est né d’un voyage de Skip Norman en Afrique de l’Ouest à la fin des années 1960. Norman met en contraste des images de Berlin – notamment le lieu de la conférence de 1884 qui a divisé le continent africain entre les puissances européennes – avec des photographies d’archives coloniales. Ces images sont accompagnées d’une voix off détaillant le fonctionnement des structures bancaires néocoloniales et des diverses formes d’extractivisme. « Le point de départ est la relation entre la prospérité de l’Europe et la pauvreté de l’Afrique, la destruction des sociétés et des cultures par l’Europe et l’utilisation simultanée du christianisme et des théories raciales pour justifier l’exploitation massive des colonisés. »
On Africa began as a trip by Skip Norman to West Africa at the end of the sixties. Norman contrasts images of Berlin – in particular the site of the 1884 conference which divided the African continent among the European powers – with colonial archive photos. These images are accompanied by a voiceover detailing the workings of neocolonial banking systems and the various forms of extractivism. “The starting point is the relation between the prosperity of Europe and poverty of Africa, the destruction of societies and cultures by Europe and the simultaneous use of Christianity and racial theories to justify the massive exploitation of the colonized.”
