Synopsis

La femme du meunier est sur le point d’accoucher. Allongée dans son lit, elle se tord de douleur. La sage-femme ne peut pas l’aider et le médecin est absent. C’est à ce moment-là qu’on appelle le prêtre. « O Senhor est un petit chef-d’œuvre. L’iconographie est cristalline : le moulin et le meunier, la femme qui donne naissance et le groupe prêt à établir une relation avec la communauté. Tout y est essentiel. Par exemple, le mouvement circulaire des ailes du moulin, filmé de cette façon, prend un sens proche de celui de la porte tambour du Dernier des hommes de Murnau : c’est le cycle infini et irrépressible de la vie contre notre désir d’arrêter le temps, c’est le remplacement du vieux par le neuf. La violence au sein de cet environnement est construite à travers un décor réduit à son essence et à une raréfaction des plans. » José Manuel Costa

The miller’s wife is about to give birth. Lying in her bed, she writhes in pain. The midwife cannot help her and the doctor is not here. It is then that the priest is called. “O Senhor is a small masterpiece. The iconography is crystalline: the mill and the miller, the woman giving birth and the group waiting to establish a relationship with the community. Everything is essential. For example, the circular movement of the mill’s blades, filmed in this manner, acquires a sense similar to that of the revolving door in Der letzte Mann by Murnau: it is the endless unstoppable cycle of life against our desire to stop time, it is the substitution of the old with the new. The violence within the environment is constructed by the essentiality of the scenography and the concentration of the shots.” José Manuel Costa
